4 Benefits of Jojoba Oil

Jojoba (pronounced hoh-hoh-bah) comes from the seed of the jojoba plant (Simmondsia chinensis.) The wax that this plant produces is a liquid wax that closely resembles the natural oils (or sebum) that are found in our skin. The jojoba plant grows in hot arid areas of the U.S. like southern California and Arizona, and some parts of Northern Mexico.

According to the Jojoba Company, jojoba oil has a very rich history. “Native Americans discovered the importance and versatility of jojoba. During the early Eighteenth Century, Jesuit missionaries in Baja observed them heating jojoba seeds to soften them. They then used pestle and mortar to create a salve or buttery substance. The latter was applied to the skin and hair to heal and condition. Native Americans also used the salve to soften and preserve animal hides. Pregnant women ate jojoba seeds, believing they assisted during childbirth. Hunters and raiders munched jojoba on the trail to keep hunger at bay.”

But what are the benefits of using jojoba oil today in the year 2019?

Hydrating

What makes jojoba oil so unique is that it closely mimics the sebum that is naturally produced by our skin. This makes it an effective hydrator as it is able to seal in moisture. And scientific research confirms this. A study demonstrated that the use of jojoba oil results in modest swelling, indicative of moisture retention in the stratum corneum (uppermost layer of skin.)

Repairs Sun Damage

Spend all day in the sun without reapplying your SPF? Jojoba oil can actually help to repair your skin after it has experienced sun damage. The co-founder of The Jojoba Company, Vicki Engsall, tells the website Byride that, “Jojoba has natural ways of protecting itself from sun damage…..Jojoba is the only plant in the world known to produce pure liquid wax esters. It layers these long molecules in the outer layer of its leaves to stop UVB rays from penetrating its leaves."

This is also why jojoba is a popular ingredient in some natural sunscreen products. One study found that when vitamin E and other antioxidants found in jojoba oil combine, they can help protect your skin from sun damage!

Balance Oily Skin

As mentioned earlier, jojoba is unique because it is so similar to the sebum that our skin produces naturally. The theory is that jojoba oil can actually “trick” the skin into thinking it’s producing enough oil, which in turn helps to balance oil production. “Jojoba oil is rich in natural fats that mimic those in the outer layer of the skin,” explains Joshua Zeichner, M.D., Director of Cosmetic and Clinical Research at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. “This means it can help the skin retain moisture and heal itself.” When skin is stripped of its natural sebum (for example if you use a harsh cleanser, or during the winter when it’s dry outside), the sebaceous glands can go into overdrive and overcorrect which results in more oil. This leads to more breakouts. Jojoba oil is able to reset your skin and balance it out again.

Increase Penetration

If you want to get the most out of your skincare products, jojoba oil can help! Using jojoba oil can actually increase the penetration of other ingredients into the skin, which is something that may be useful for anti-acne treatments, such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or retinoids.

Bottomline

Jojoba Oil is a very beneficial ingredient and makes a great addition to your skincare routine. It is one of our favorite ingredients for our herbal skincare lines of products. We love jojoba oil so much we included it in our Nourishing Youth Serum. This is an ultra-light and rich serum formulated with a proprietary blend of natural oils (such as jojoba, argan, and safflower) aloe juice, antioxidants, and ancient Eastern herbs. It has milky white in color and carries a refreshing and evanescent herbal aroma that will delight your senses. The serum contains millions of submicron droplets that instantly hydrate and moisturize your skin. It is gentle but powerful enough to help with the toughest signs of aging.

What sets the Nourishing Youth Serum apart is that we don’t use heat. The vast majority of the serums on the market use heat during the manufacturing process. Heat destabilizes and destroys active ingredients, making the final serums less potent. Our serum is made with patented cold-pressurized manufacturing technology. Active ingredients in our serum are preserved. Making our serum more powerful.
